Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)
The SIOP instructional model ensures that lessons are presented in an accessible way for English language learners (ELLs).
Language and content
objectives which are taught explicitly before, during and after each
lesson. This ensures that students are aware of what they are
responsible for learning
Building background, connecting present learning to past learning, present vocabulary in an interactive way
Lessons integrate all four domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English
The SIOP teacher will
scaffold the lesson by modeling until the children are ready to
practice with help. The lesson will move to a time when the children
work independently until they can prove that they understand.
The lessons are hands-on, meaningful, linked to the objectives, and promote a high level of engagement.
SIOP teachers use a variety of grouping options
Pre and post-assessment includes individual, group, written and oral projects
