Special Education

Special education is specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability. At Johnston Elementary, we look at each student’s needs for special education services on an individual basis. A request for special education consideration is made by the classroom teacher or parent. Referral, evaluation, identification, and special education services are provided as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and the North Carolina Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities.

Students with special needs are served in their least restrictive environment, as determined by the IEP team. This may be on an individual basis, in small groups, or in the regular classrooms.  Decisions about a student’s special education eligibility and services are made by the school’s IEP Team.  The IEP team consists of a special education teacher, regular education teacher, LEA (representative of the local education agency, usually an administrator), and the parent. Additional staff are included as needed.
