Meet Your Teacher

Hello My Name Is...

Kimberly Altman

This is my first year at Johnston and I am so excited to be a Bear!  My first nine years teaching I spent at Glen Arden Elementary, in Arden.  This is my tenth year teaching overall, and I've spend my whole career here in Asheville.

I grew up in Tampa, Florida and attended the University of Florida for both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees.  Go Gators!  As soon as I graduated, I moved up to Asheville.  I just love the mountains, the weather, and especially all of the whitewater rivers in the area!

I moved to Asheville because while I was in college, I worked as a raft guide on the French Broad River my very last college summer.  I fell in love with the area and with whitewater.  I knew that I wanted to continue raft guiding and being on the water when I started teaching, so that's what I did!  I continued to expand my whitewater skills by learning how to whitewater kayak.  Most weekends I am in my kayak on some river in the area.  Sometimes I even go kayaking after school!  I also love to play the guitar and the piano in my spare time.  Another thing I love to do is read.  I don't have as much time to read as I would like, but I squeeze it in every moment I can.

My family still (mostly) lives in Florida and I make trips back there a few times a year to visit.  I love Asheville and I have loved getting to be part of the Johnston family.  Here's to a great year!
