Welcome to my Classroom
Welcome to fourth grade and Mrs. Downing's class!! I am so happy to be at Johnston Elementary this year!
I began teaching in January 1984. I have taught in Florida, Wyoming, and North Carolina. This is my twenty second year with Buncombe County Schools! I have taught special education, fifth grade, middle school math science, and social studies over the past 21 years. I am excited about the new learning that I will be doing as I teach fourth grade this year!
I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of South Florida. I also completed a Master's degree in American History at Western Carolina University. I am certified in North Carolina to teach special education (K-12), elementary education (K-6), and language arts, math, science and social studies in the middle grades (6-8).
This year we will be learning a lot! In reading, we will be developing critical thinking skills and learning how to answer questions by citing evidence from the text. We will be reading both fiction and non-fiction works, as well as poetry. Multiplication, division, fractions and geometry will be out focus in mathematics. The students will be learning about North Carolina - its history, economy, landforms, and government. Students will also be exploring the adaptations of plants and animals, rocks and minerals, nutrition and exercise, and magnetism.
My goal is to move each child forward in his or her learning, so they can be successful every day. I also want them to be prepared for EOGs. I will work as hard as I can to help your child prepare, but your child has to be willing to work as well.
I'm ready for a great year!
