Special education is specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability. At Johnston Elementary, we look at each student’s needs for special education services on an individual basis. Referral, evaluation, identification, and special education services are provided as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and the North Carolina Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities.
Decisions about a student’s special education eligibility and services are made by the school’s IEP Team. The IEP team consists of a special education teacher, regular education teacher, LEA (representative of the local education agency, usually an administrator), and the parent. Additional staff are included as needed. Services and supports for students with disabilities may include, but are not limited to, special education, therapy and/or support from a speech/language therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, behavior specialist, vision specialist, hearing specialist.
