Buncombe County Schools is proud to celebrate Angie Trantham of Johnston Elementary School who has been named the 2026-2027 Buncombe County Schools Principal of the Year.
Trantham’s recognition celebrates her dedication to students, staff, families, and the entire Johnston Elementary community. Through her leadership, she works to create a welcoming school environment where students are encouraged to learn, grow, and reach new heights.
Being a principal means wearing many hats - from supporting teachers and celebrating student successes to building relationships with families and helping guide the school community. Mrs. Trantham’s commitment to Johnston Elementary and the students she serves reflects the strong leadership found throughout Buncombe County Schools.
“Ms. Trantham has been an instrumental leader in transforming Johnston Elementary into what we proudly call Joyful Johnston - a place where students feel valued, known, and appreciated, and where every staff member believes deeply that every student is capable of high levels of learning,” said Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Reed. “Through a powerful mission and vision, meaningful partnerships with community organizations, and a relentless commitment to building the capacity of her staff, Ms. Trantham has led an extraordinary transformation. Under her leadership, Johnston has exited low-performing status and become a school where children love to learn and families are proud to call it home. I could not be more proud of the work she has led. Buncombe County Schools is a stronger school system because of Ms. Trantham’s leadership, and our students are better because she believes so fiercely in what they can become.”
As Principal of the Year, Mrs. Trantham will represent the district while highlighting the important role school leaders play in creating opportunities for every student to succeed.
