The ESL program at Johnston Elementary has two full time instructors. Ms. Crist and Mrs. Hagewood. Both teachers hold a Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Students attend ESL class 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes a day.
The purpose of the ESL program is to help our students develop their academic English in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Each year students' English language proficiency is tested using the WIDA / ACCESS test. We use these scores to design our curriculum therefore providing instruction based on students' needs. Our goal is for each student to increase their language proficiency at least one level each year in all domains (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
